version B

An abstract piece that explores the possibility of working together, creating together, dissolving ideas, and breaking apart. What does it look like when we work towards a common goal separately? What does it look like when we work towards that common goal together? Can we even work together? Using the principles Listen, Look, Action, Breathe and Learn I ask this question.

This is the second interpretation of Working Separately Together.

Premiered May 2019.

Choreography: Jessica Ray in collaboration with the dancers.

Dancers: Alyssa Brown, Blaire Eberhart, Jessica Ray, Kim Savarino & Brooke Stewart

Music: Dive Reflex Service

E C H O I N S O L O

A work in progress at the beginning of the research stage. A commentary about purity culture in the church. This version of the work is a beginning in my process of exploring this premise in greater detail, and actually stemmed from a freewrite about purity culture and the idea that women should hold their bodies sacred because patriarchal beliefs steeped in religion. Currently, it is a personal reflection of a woman learning to accept her body, though she's been told to disown many aspects that keep it healthy and make her who she is.

BLACK BEING: ITERATIONS 1 & 2

This piece is my interpretation of a being black, and a woman exploring birth and the expectations and stereotypes of a‘black being.’ The second iteration is an exploration into colorism, where there is a conversation about privilege based on skin tone. Hoping to add on a 3rd Iteration in 2019 that explores motherhood and the fear and reality attached to that.

Premiered October 21, 2018

CULT/ure (work in progress)

This work is a commentary on media as a distraction and narrative in our daily lives.  Specifically, this piece is meant to mirror cult behaviors and attributes, which provide an allusion to media being the major cult leader of our current time.  Though cult comparison is the intention of the piece, this idea is still being choreographically investigated both physically and digitally. The piece is currently accompanied by an original projection comprised of current event news clips and abstract images of noise, along with sections of dance improvisation.

This piece is a work in progress that currently runs 14 minutes.

Premiered January 2017.

Julie Baston-Carter, Kyla Ranney, Jessica Ray, and Brooke Stewart are the cast.

Music by Ashur Rayis, David Bowie.
